Erica J Photography Behind the Scenes 2017

As social media consumers, we all are no strangers to the concept of seeing only heavily curated highlight reels in our feeds. And that’s ok, because, let’s be honest: when was the last time you were inspired by someone’s dirty laundry? But every once in awhile we need a dose of realism to remind us that behind every highlight reel is also a fair amount of hot mess. Today I am sharing my hot mess with you. The messy, sweaty, hot mess that is the behind the scenes of wedding photography.

The behind the scenes of one my favorite images taken at Vizcaya Museum

I fully expect to wrinkle early from all of the squinty face making that photography requires. A hazard of the job, I suppose.

I’d like to affectionately call this one “Crouching Photog, Hidden Dragon”And thank goodness for rubber shoes, ’cause you never know when you’ll need to go wading on a wedding day….

Thought I’d slip in a quick Bernie dance move while on the job…

Short wedding photographer life 20% figuring out how to reach high places 80% actually photographing

Fun fact: where we are standing used to be a lovely grassy knoll. But we showed up on the wedding day and it looked like this…so we went with it, dead grass and all!

I honestly don’t know what I would do without my trusting sidekick…aka my step stool.

“You can either follow my instructions or get out” I run a tight ship.

Dear boys: I may or may not force you to hold hands with a girl on your wedding day, you’ve been warned.

Need a great calf workout? Try wedding photography!

Pro tip: distract the bride and groom with each other and they won’t even notice when you take the bouquet and run! #misdirection

Sometimes I forget what a short human I am until I see photos of myself next to normal sized humans!

“Don’t worry: I’ll get to taking photos of you right after I capture this leaf over here. Priorities, ya know.”

That one time when a tropical storm blasted the wedding day but we powered through anyway…

When your dress breaks 2 seconds before your first look…

You cannot see me, I am a wall!

So much hair fixing…is it too much to add “hair stylist” to my resume?

And I end with my favorite behind the scenes photo of the year there on the left. I look like I’m coming in for the attack and honestly I can neither confirm nor deny if I did.

Special shoutout to The Dragonfly Photography and Kenneth Smith Photos for taking the images in this post. Couldn’t have braved those days with you guys!
